A Beginner's Guide to Caring for Rose of Sharon
Light and Location
Your Blue Chiffon® needs at least six hours of direct sunshine to produce the best flowers. Too much shade leads to fewer blooms and weaker growth. And because of its shallow root system, be sure it’s protected from wind.
Soil
Well-draining soil with lots of organic matter will make this lovely shrub happy. Just be sure she doesn’t get waterlogged or left standing in too much water.
Watering
Water deeply and regularly in the beginning, when your shrub is settling in and getting established, and then a moderate watering schedule during the growing and blooming season.
Feeding
Feed your rose of Sharon in the early spring with granular rose fertilizer.
Pruning and Grooming
Your Blue Chiffon® blooms on new wood, so pruning in late winter or early spring is fine. Remove any dead or damaged wood and shape her as you like. Pruning isn’t necessary, but can promote flowering and help control her size.
