Proven Winners’ Shadowland® Coast to Coast Hosta

Hosta: Proven Winners’ Shadowland® Coast to Coast

Botanical Name: Rosa x 'Meipeporia'
(pronounced: ROH-sa HY-brid MAY-peh-poriah)

Great for Beginners ? Part Shade to Shade ? Seasonal Interest

This striking shade perennial has bold, gold-colored leaves, which really pop and shine, helping it stand out in a shady location. And bonus, that gold coloring will become even brighter in the morning sun. Even more, the leaves are a bit puckered, adding nice textural interest.

Along with the huge impact the leaves provide, Shadowland® Coast to Coast Hostas bloom mid-summer with pale violet flowers that attract hummingbirds.

Our friend, Garden Answer Laura has planted them in both the landscape and in containers; in fact, she had Coast to Coast Hostas growing in her garden and in pots, and they were beautiful, and then a hail storm rolled through and tore up all the leaves. She cut the leaves way back and while they were initially sad about it, the hostas flushed back out really quickly. In her words, “They didn’t skip a beat and we enjoyed them for the rest of the season.”

Four Reasons Why You'll Love
Proven Winners' Shadowland® Coast to Coast Hosta

Light Up the Shade

Finding brightly-colored plants for shade can be tricky. These hostas transition from chartreuse-yellow in spring to lighter gold in summer. But while most gold hostas eventually turn green, Coast to Coast maintains its yellow tone through the entire season.

Cold Hardy

Hardy down to -40°F, you should never have to worry about this perennial returning reliably every year.

Glorious Backdrop

While it can be the star in the spotlight, this gold hosta can also set the stage for smaller, colorful flowers and perennials you can plant at its feet.

Hummer Magnet

Sure, the grand leaves are the main attraction, but the pale violet flowers that appear in midsummer attract hummingbirds, bringing nice pollinator activity to your garden.

A Beginner's Guide to Caring for
Proven Winners' Shadowland® Coast to Coast Hosta

Light and Location

Find a spot for your Shadowland® Coast to Coast Hosta where it can be in part shade to shade. (And “shade” means up to four hours.) If it can get some morning sunlight, the gold leaves will be even brighter.

Soil

These hostas perform well in average to fertile soil, but will grow best in moist, well-drained, organically enriched soil.

Watering

This golden beauty has average water needs, and once established can even tolerate dry shade. In general though, it’s best if you can keep the soil from drying out.

Pruning

Remove dead leaves, which can help prevent insect problems, and cut the flower spikes back after they finish blooming in summer.
