Just because the temps are falling doesn’t mean you can’t continue to have fun gardening…
Mums, ornamental cabbages and kale, grasses, pansies, and gourds, glorious gourds of all kinds, are yours to play with. And when you add a wild selection of fall containers for your porch or deck, the ideas are endless!
Start by cleaning your existing containers or brighten up your area with new ones, including baskets, whiskey barrels and even pumpkins themselves. Replace the tired, scraggly summer plants with healthy, happy fall plants.
And don’t forget the thriller, filler and spiller combination to make your container creations really sing:
THRILLERS
tall, upright plants, with outstanding qualities—such as colorful foliage, intriguing shape, or dramatic flowers
FILLERS
full, more finely textured plants that surround and weave through the thriller, adding mass
SPILLERS
plants that sprawl over the side of the container, softening its edges and tumbling toward the ground
Other ideas? How about using dried corn stalks or differently stacked bales of hay to add some height? Wrap the bales with festive orange ribbons and tie beautiful bows and you’ve just upped your porch party décor. Add a nice chalkboard greeting, a fun sign or paint a pumpkin or two.
