The fig for everyone who's been told figs don't grow here. This one does — and the plants on the bench are already setting fruit.

'Chicago Hardy' earned its name surviving winters far colder than Northern Virginia sees. Even when a hard freeze knocks the branches back, it regrows from the roots and fruits on the new wood, so a rough winter costs you height, not harvest. The figs ripen brown-purple from late summer into fall, sweet enough to eat straight off the tree. Give it a sunny, sheltered spot in the ground or keep it in a large patio pot you can tuck against the house in winter.

The basics

  • 🌿 3-gallon pot, already setting fruit
  • ☀️ Full sun
  • 🍈 Sweet purple-brown figs, late summer into fall
  • 📏 10–15' in the ground, easily kept smaller in a pot
  • 💧 Water deeply while establishing, drought tolerant after
  • ❄️ The cold-hardiest fig you can grow here — fruits on new wood
