Edge of Night Hibiscus — Dark-Leaf Rose Mallow (Hibiscus 'Edge of Night') · 3 Gal

The leaves are the darkest a hibiscus grows — so deep they read black from across the yard. Then the blooms open against them: bubblegum pink, seven to eight inches across, veined in darker pink with a red eye at the center. The contrast does all the work, and it does it from midsummer into fall.

It's a true perennial, not the patio kind. Plant it once and it dies back each winter, sleeps late in spring, then returns bigger every year. It stays around three feet tall, the most compact of its series, so it fits a front bed or a big container without taking either over. Full sun brings out the blackest leaf color.
