Fuchsia-red flowers through the summer, on a plant that earns its keep the rest of the year too. The foliage turns orange-red in fall, and once the leaves drop you're left with smooth, mottled bark that peels back in sheets. It's one of the few things in the yard worth walking out to look at in February.

It's a semi-dwarf, multi-stemmed shrub that reaches about eight feet tall and wide. Leave it alone and it fills in as a rounded shrub; limb up the lower stems over a few seasons and you've got a small multi-trunk tree. Full sun, and water deeply when the soil goes dry rather than sprinkling it often.

A National Arboretum hybrid, bred by crossing Lagerstroemia indica with L. fauriei โ€” that cross is where the mildew and leaf spot resistance comes from, along with the better bark.
