Red King Crocosmia — Summer-Blooming Perennial (Crocosmia × crocosmiiflora 'Red King') · 1.5 Gal
Red King doesn't do subtle. Arching stems rise over sword-like foliage and light up with fire-engine red blooms right when the rest of the garden starts feeling the heat — and the hummingbirds find it about a day after you plant it.
It's a plant that earns its keep: mid-to-late summer bloom when color is scarce, corms that multiply into a bigger show each year, and stems that hold up beautifully in a vase if you can bring yourself to cut a few.
Easy rule for our Northern Virginia gardens: full sun and well-drained soil. It's drought-tolerant once established, and in our 7b it's a true perennial — plant it once, enjoy it for years.
