Japanese anemone earns its spot by timing. It starts up as the summer perennials are winding down and carries the border the rest of the way through fall. 'Sweetly' does it in semi-double rose pink, held well above a broad mound of dark green leaves.

Part sun to full sun, average water, nothing fussy. It spreads slowly by rhizome, so one plant widens into a patch over a few seasons instead of staying put — worth knowing before you decide where it goes. Deer and rabbits tend to pass it by, which counts for something around here. It cuts well for the vase, too.
