Kudos Red Hummingbird Mint — Dwarf Agastache (Agastache 'Kudos Red') · 1.5 Gal
Most hummingbird mints have the same problem: they flop, they mildew, and they quit by midsummer — right when the pollinators are counting on them. Kudos Red doesn't.
It sends up airy spikes of nectar-rich red flowers over a neat, aromatic mound, blooming nonstop from June to September. It's from the Kudos series — bred to stay compact and well-branched (about 10–14" tall, 22–28" wide) and to shrug off the downy mildew that takes down lesser hummingbird mints. Brush a leaf and you'll catch its warm, minty-licorice scent… the same one the deer steer clear of.
Here's the one rule for our Northern Virginia gardens: full sun, and soil that drains. Kudos Red is built for heat and dry spells — what it won't forgive is wet feet, so skip the soggy corner and ease off the water once it's settled in. Do that, and it's hardy in zones 6–10: a true perennial that comes back to feed the bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds year after year. (It's the fiery vertical spike in our Hummingbird Heatwave trio.)
