Mums want sun. This one doesn't — which makes it the answer for the shady side of the porch, the spot under the tree, the north-facing step where nothing fall-colored has ever worked.

Slim pink flowers open along dark maroon stems, held above leaves marbled in silver and deep green. The foliage alone would earn the pot; the bloom spikes come up through it and keep going into fall. It's a looser, wilder look than a mum — the two of them side by side is a better porch than either one twice.

It's tender here, so treat it as a warm-season container plant and bring it in before the first hard frost if you want to keep it going indoors over winter.
