A hummingbird mint shrunk to container size. It holds at ten to twelve inches tall and about fifteen across, packed with soft butter-yellow flower spikes from early summer straight through fall — a long run of bloom for a plant this small.
Brush the foliage and you'll catch the mint-licorice scent the whole genus is known for. It handles heat and dry spells without complaint, which is most of what a Northern Virginia August asks of a plant. Small enough for a pot by the door, a sidewalk edge, or the front of a border where taller perennials would swallow it.
