Deep purple-magenta flowers that shift with the light — cooler and more violet early and late, hotter and pinker under full afternoon sun. They open in early summer and keep coming, and if you deadhead the spent trusses you'll often get a second push before the season's out. New growth comes in red-tinted before it hardens off to glossy green.
It's a dense, rounded shrub that settles at seven to eight feet tall and about as wide — big enough to read from the street, small enough that it isn't a problem in five years. Full sun is non-negotiable; shade gives you a thin plant and half the flowers. Once it's rooted in, it takes our August dry spells without complaint.
A First Editions® introduction, and it's highly resistant to the leaf spot and powdery mildew that leave older crape myrtles looking tired by the end of the season.
