Coral bells are grown for the leaves, and these are about as bold as the purples get. Large, scalloped, and genuinely glossy, with charcoal veins running all through them. White flowers arrive mid-summer on dark stems, each one sitting in a rosy pink calyx, and they keep coming into fall.

It takes sun or shade, which makes it one of the easier things to place — the same plant works under a tree and along a walk. The one thing it asks for is drainage. Our clay holds water longer than heuchera likes, so work in some compost and set the crown a little high when you plant it.
