The red gets you first. 'Midnight Marvel' opens 8–9 inch blooms — genuinely dinner-plate size — in bright, saturated scarlet, from glossy black-red buds that look lacquered before they open. Behind the flowers: deep wine-purple, maple-shaped leaves that make every bloom land like a spotlight.

And it's a true perennial here, not the patio hibiscus you replace every spring. It dies back each winter, sleeps late (always the last thing to wake up in May — don't panic), and returns bigger, topping out around 4 feet tall and just as wide. Give it full sun — that's what turns the foliage its darkest — and it'll bloom from midsummer into fall while the hummingbirds run patrol.
