Three colors in one pot — purple, gold and red, opening together.

This one is grown from three separate varieties in the same root ball: Regal Cheryl Purple, Golden Cheryl and Jolly Cheryl Red. That is why it does not read flat. You get different petal forms sitting right next to each other — some opening wide with a dark eye, some staying tight and full — instead of one flower shape repeated a few hundred times.

These came in barely started. Most of the buds are still closed, and that is exactly what you want. A mum already smothered in flowers has done most of its blooming somewhere else. This one will do its blooming on your porch, over the next few weeks.

Care is simple. Full sun, six hours or more, with a little afternoon shade if the heat hangs on. Water it daily while it is warm — a mum that dries out will bloom out early and be finished before October.

Then don't throw it away at Thanksgiving. Garden mums are perennial here in 7b. Plant it in the ground this fall and it comes back next spring as a tidy green mound, closer to a small boxwood than a flower, and does the whole show again in September.
