Botanical Name: Hibiscus syriacus
Great for Beginners 🧡 Full Sun 🧡 Blooms Summer – Fall
Blue! When it comes to flowers, blue is always exciting because it’s a harder color to find. Which is just one reason why the Blue Chiffon® Rose of Sharon is such a spectacular plant.
Another reason to love this shrub is that the blue single flowers are large and have very lacy centers, which give them each a full, almost double appearance with an anemone type bloom.
Plus, they cover the plant; they start to bloom about mid-summer (during the dog days), and the shrub just shines in the landscape, blooming usually right through our first hard frost.
Four Reasons Why You’ll Love Blue Chiffon® Rose of Sharon
Standout Color
We can vouch that it’s indeed a true blue. The fluffy centers of the showy flowers—with a reddish purple starburst at the base of the outer petals—make them even more full, and each bloom is up to four inches across.
Long Blooming Period
Bold yet delicate, Blue Chiffon® is a continuously blooming star in the garden from late summer to fall, just when other plants are starting to look tired…
Lovely Stature
This deciduous shrub, growing about eight to twelve feet tall, and four to six feet wide, has a refined, rounded habit with soft, elegant stems that can move and groove in a gentle breeze.
Not a Wilting Violet
It’s heat tolerant, drought tolerant, salt tolerant, and generally resistant to pests and diseases. Wow!
Pollinator Magnet
The flowers are rich in nectar and pollen, attracting our pollinator friends that include bees, butterflies and hummingbirds and birds.

A Beginner’s Guide to Caring for Rose of Sharon
Light and Location
Your Blue Chiffon® needs at least six hours of direct sunshine to produce the best flowers. Too much shade leads to fewer blooms and weaker growth. And because of its shallow root system, be sure it’s protected from wind.
Soil
Well-draining soil with lots of organic matter will make this lovely shrub happy. Just be sure she doesn’t get waterlogged or left standing in too much water.
Watering
Water deeply and regularly in the beginning, when your shrub is settling in and getting established, and then a moderate watering schedule during the growing and blooming season.
Feeding
Feed your rose of Sharon in the early spring with granular rose fertilizer.
Pruning and Grooming
Your Blue Chiffon® blooms on new wood, so pruning in late winter or early spring is fine. Remove any dead or damaged wood and shape her as you like. Pruning isn’t necessary, but can promote flowering and help control her size.
